Rodrigo Pacheco was awarded a Michael J. Fox Foundation Grant for his research in Parkinson’s disease

27/04/2015

Rodrigo Pacheco’s research obtained support from the Target Validation Program from The Michael J. Fox Foundation. The grant is for up to US $250,000 for two years. In 2013, Dr. Pacheco and his collaborators — researchers at Fundación Ciencia & Vida — discovered that a dopamine receptor located in T lymphocytes has a fundamental role in the development and progression of Parkinson’s disease.

Thanks to this grant, the team will be able to validate this receptor as a therapeutic target. The work will focus on the inhibition of the dopamine receptor specifically in lymphocytes to determine whether it is able to decrease or stop the progression of Parkinson’s disease in a mouse model. The potential results could give clues for the generation of an immunotherapy for human Parkinson’s disease.
