Alfonso Gonzalez, PhD
Principal Investigator
Dr. Luis Alfonso González de la Rosa is a Chilean physician-scientist with MD and PhD in Cell Biology degrees from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). After completing postdoctoral training at the NYU Medical Center, he became Full Professor at PUC’s Faculty of Medicine and Biological Sciences, later receiving the Presidential Chair in Sciences. He has been a leading researcher supported by funding awarded to excellence centers, including FONDAP, Milenio, and Basal Funding.
His research has advanced our understanding of protein trafficking in cell polarity and cancer, and of neuroimmune mechanisms in systemic lupus erythematosus. His lab identified neuronal surface P antigen (NSPA) proteins targeted by autoantibodies, and studies the role of galectin-8 as an immunomodulatory glycan-binding protein.
In 2016, he moved to Universidad San Sebastián (USS), where he founded the Center for Cellular Biology and Biomedicine (CEBICEM) and launched an accredited PhD program in Cellular Biology and Biomedicine. He also contributes to Fundación Ciencia & Vida as a researcher.
Dr. González has supervised more than 30 doctoral students on topics such as intracellular receptor trafficking, neural dysfunction mediated by autoantibodies, and the biology of galectin-8. He currently teaches cellular and molecular biology in undergraduate and doctoral programs in medicine and biomedicine at USS.
