The Deputy Director of the Veterinary Area at Centro Ciencia & Vida (FCV-USS) received a fellowship from the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) to participate in a course on assisted reproduction and cryopreservation. The training took place from October 13 to 15, 2026, at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in Brazil.
The course, titled "From Cryopreservation to Repositories: Advancing Mouse Reproductive Cell Storage", was organized by the ICGEB and held at the Assisted Reproduction Innovation Laboratory (LIRA) of the UFRJ. Martina Crispo, Marcello Raspa, Andrés Muro, Arnon Jurberg, and Marcel Frajblat were among the specialists who shared experiences and advances in assisted reproduction, the generation of genetically modified models, and the creation of genetic resource repositories.
One of the central topics was how to achieve long-term conservation and facilitate the distribution of high scientific value mouse lines. Cryopreservation can improve colony management and reduce the need to permanently maintain breeding animals. This contributes to applying the 3Rs principle (replacement, reduction, and refinement) in animal research.

For the Veterinary Area at Centro Ciencia & Vida, this training opens an opportunity to strengthen its capabilities in the conservation and recovery of murine genetic resources. These techniques can facilitate collaboration in biomedical research and contribute to animal welfare.
"Participating in this event was a highly enriching experience, both due to the quality of the training and the opportunity to exchange experiences with colleagues from other countries. These spaces allow us to build collaborative ties, learn about different work approaches, and incorporate new ideas that contribute to the development of our activities and the strengthening of scientific research at our institution," Ricca pointed out.
