Fabiola Osorio Olivares

Principal investigator

Biography

Fabiola Osorio, Ph.D., holds a degree in Molecular Biotechnology Engineering from the University of Chile (2006) and a Ph.D. in Immunology and Molecular Pathology from University College London, UK (2010). She completed her postdoctoral training at the VIB-Inflammation Research Center, Belgium (2013). She is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, at the University of Chile, and co-director of the Immunology Laboratory, together with Professors María Rosa Bono and Daniela Sauma.

Her research lies at the intersection of immunology and cell stress biology, with a particular focus on understanding how myeloid cells, especially dendritic cells, integrate signals from the tissue microenvironment to shape inflammation and maintain tissue homeostasis. Her pioneering contributions have helped elucidate the role of cellular proteostasis and endoplasmic reticulum stress responses in regulating dendritic cell function and immunity under both physiological and pathological conditions.

As an independent investigator, she has established an original research program and developed international collaborations that provide new insights into the mechanisms linking cellular stress, inflammation, and immune-mediated diseases, resulting in impactful scientific publications. She has supervised more than 20 undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral trainees, several of whom have continued their scientific careers at international research institutions.

Her research has received funding from national and international agencies, and she currently serves as a Principal Investigator at the Centro Ciencia & Vida. Her scientific achievements have been recognized through several prestigious distinctions, including the Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Research Scholar Award, the European Union's Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship, funding from the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), and the Adelina Gutiérrez Award for Scientific Excellence from the Chilean Academy of Sciences.
